We are now on the verge of participating in the AU African Union Continental Conference: Transforming Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in Africa, an event jointly organized by UNESCO and the African Union. This three-day meeting, which will take place from 26 to 28 November 2024, represents a unique opportunity to discuss the future of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in Africa, promoting innovative solutions that can transform the continent.
Pathoxphere was invited to present its innovative telepathology model on the inaugural day of the event, during the STEM Experience Hub. For us, this invitation represents an important recognition of our work in digital health and a tremendous opportunity to contribute to the dialogue on how technology can address some of the most pressing health challenges in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
What we will present: innovation and sustainability through telepathology and STEM
Pathoxphere aims to bridge the gap in access to advanced healthcare diagnostics and services in LMICs, with a particular focus on cancer diagnostics. During the conference, we will present:
Our telepathology model: a technology that allows you to digitally send pathology data (such as slide images and tissue samples) to specialists for remote diagnosis. This system:
- Facilitates access to expert advice, making highly qualified resources available even in the most remote areas.
- Overcomes geographical barriers, ensuring that no community is excluded from diagnostic services.
- Improves prevention and early diagnosis of diseases, offering a more timely and accurate response to local health needs.
The integration between STEM and digital health: our approach combines STEM education and advanced technologies to create a sustainable model. We train local healthcare professionals, providing them with the skills needed to use and maintain advanced diagnostic tools. This strengthens the self-sufficiency of medical communities and fosters the development of resilient and innovative healthcare systems.
A long-term impact
Pathoxphere doesn’t just provide a short-term solution. Our goal is to help build a sustainable healthcare ecosystem in LMICs, capable of continuously improving without relying solely on external aid. This means:
- Empowering local talent: we train professionals who can become leaders in digital healthcare.
- Creating self-sustaining communities: We strengthen local science and technology skills to support innovation and growth.
- Contribution to economic development: we encourage the creation of new business opportunities in the field of diagnostics and digital health.
The importance of the event
For Pathoxphere, being part of this event means participating in a global dialogue on how science and technology can transform the future of Africa. We are excited to share our experience and learn from the partners and leaders in attendance.
We thank UNESCO and the African Union for the invitation and opportunity to contribute to an initiative that we believe is crucial to the advancement of healthcare and innovation on the African continent.
